Nandu (Crab) Thokku Masala - Moms Special!!
Crab a very tasty dish by itself!! Make the most of it by preparing this simple yet Delicious dish. This is a very common dish made by my mom , I start drooling when this gets cooked bcoz the aroma it lets out is so mesmerizing.
Few tips:
Buy Nandu (Crabs) during Amavasai , No moon day; Crabs gets into full flesh for reproduction during this phase and clean crabs otherwise they don't come out well.
Clean and cook immeditely ; Fresh crabs are always the best; eat soon as cooked ; freezing them and reheating not much advisable
Crabs gets cooked easily ; over cooking should be avoided
Cooking time : 15 -20 min ; Serves : 3 people
Grind it to paste:
Sina vengayam / Small onions - 10-15
Patta -1 to 2
Lavangam -1 to 2
Kadal Pasi - small piece
Seeragam - 1 spoon
Sombu - 1 spoon
Melagu / Pepper - 1 spoon
K.Molakai / Red Chilli - 5-6
Ginger - small piece
Garlic - 6-7 pods
Thengai/ Coconut - a small piece
Pour oil and fry all these , allow to cool and grind them to a paste
Crab - 5-6 (Big) Clean and cook immediately
Onion - 1
Tomato - 2
Chilly Dhaniya powder (check and add if needed) - 1/ 2 spoon
Salt - to taste
Turmeric powder - one pinch
To season:
Oil (Gingily oil) - 1 cup
Mustard seeds
Sombu
Curry leaf
Process :
Keep Kadai ; add oil ; Once hot; add Kaduku (mustard seeds), Sombu , Curry leaves and allow it to splutter
Now add Onion,allow it to fry, once color changes; add Tomato and a pinch of turmeric
Now add the ground masala
Once fried add the crab , this will ooze out water now sprinkle water and allow it to cook for 5 min
Serve hot with Rice!!

Valakkai Poriyal (Raw Banana Fry)
Valakkai Poriyal is a must in any occasion, festival. Valakkai is made as a important vegetable to be cooked during Amavasai. Here, goes the easy recipe made by the traditional way. I will give here two different ways of preparing the dish
Valakkai - 1
Mustard seed - some
Green Chilly -2
Urad Dhall - a spoon
Channa Dhall - 1 spoon
Curry leave - 4-5
Asefodia
Salt - to taste
Cocunut scraps - 2 teaspoon
First steam the Raw banana in a Idly cooker and keep it aside
Peel off the outer layer and cut to box like shapes
Now, keep a kadai, add Oil, mustard seeds allow it to splutter, now add Urad dhall, Channa dhall, curry leaves, Asefodia.
Add the cut Banana pieces and add desired amount of salt. Sprinkle little water and allow it to boil.
Add Coconut scrap and switch off .
